Labor Minister Makes Surprise Visit to Monitor Conditions of Factory Workers

PHNOM PENH: Minister of Labor and Vocational Training Heng Sour made a surprise visit to a factory in Phnom Penh and met with the workers at their on-site living quarters to better understand their living and working conditions on August 23.

On the his first day as Minister of Labor and Vocational Training, Heng Sour made the visit upon former prime minister Hun Sen’s request that the next administration pay attention to laborers. "According to the order of Hun Sen, the Ministry must consider the well-being of the workers as their own. Leaders at all levels must stand with the people, with the workers, with their real situation," he said.

Heng Sour said that he will examine the situation of the workers and work with relevant leaders to monitor their conditions on a regular basis. During the visit, he inspected the working conditions at a shoe production line and had a meal with the workers employed at the Mengda Footwear factory on Veng Sreng Road without any plans.

In a Facebook post about the trip he wrote, "Sorry, I came down without telling you in advance!"

He also stated that the factory currently employs over 3,000 workers, including 160 pregnant workers and 43 persons with disabilities. The workers had previously met with former prime minister Hun Sen in 2018. The factory’s administration, section chief, and team leader also met with Prime Minister Hun Manet in May 2023 while he was still PM-in-waiting.

Heng Sour added, "The people I remember Hun Sen and always remember the close and warm pictures of Hun Sen visiting the workers in the past. The workers look forward to meeting energetic, strong and successful Hun Manet soon. ”

He asked the leaders and officials of the Ministry, along the management of each factory to visit and eat with workers often to taste the food, monitor hygiene conditions and find ways to improve or spread successful models elsewhere. During his visit, he observed that the food at the factory was delicious and hygienic, and an acceptable model for others.
